Powering the Next Generation of Electric Two-wheelers
The electric mobility revolution has taken the automotive world by storm, especially in the two wheelers segment. Conventionally, two wheelers have been a popular commute option amongst the working class. Electrifying this segment is paramount if we want to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels.
According to research firm Frost and Sullivan, the two-wheeler segment will constitute nearly 60 percent of the electric vehicle market, with a healthy growth of nearly 38 percent by 2020. Globally, the two wheeler EV industry was valued at $9 billion in 2018 and is expected to post a CAGR of 7% during the period of 2019-2023.
With rising fuel costs, increased air pollution concerns, and the thrill of possessing an electric vehicle, the adoption of electric two wheelers is fast paced.
However there’s still a long way to go!
Barriers related to battery cost and maintenance are a major hurdle. Simultaneously, criterion such as safety, life-span and performance, often raise concerns in the minds of buyers. In fact, there is rapid transition from lead acid batteries to lithium-ion batteries, thanks to their longer life cycles, better discharge rates and lighter weight. But even with Li-ion batteries, phenomenon such as thermal runaway causing explosions, or capacity losses caused by aging are leaving buyers hapless. Their high energy density might leave them unstable in certain extreme conditions of temperature, voltage and charge/ discharge rate.
Fortunately for two wheeler EV manufacturers and battery pack makers, there’s good news!
These are the kind of challenges that the we aim to conquer. Our proprietary battery management systems, the FS-LT helps smoothen this transition towards electric mobility.
Why do you need Battery Management Systems (BMS)?
Batteries are one of the major expenses the end-consumer has to bear in the case of electric two wheelers. A delicate component, they may deteriorate on overcharging, under use or high temperatures.
This is why Battery Management Systems (BMS) are crucial for the longevity of a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. A BMS is an electronic device responsible for monitoring the smooth functioning and preventing it from exceeding safe limits of operation by monitoring individual cells of the battery pack. It protects, optimises and collects data from internal cell hardware components. It records parameters such as current, voltage, temperature, State of Charge and State of Health to name a few. When building your battery, incorporating a smart BMS will give insights of its overall health.
Think of the two wheeler as a being with the battery being its muscles. The BMS is the grey matter governing the well-being of these muscles. Let’s suppose your battery is ageing or undergoing high temperature conditions while delivering high currents constantly; this poses a hazard to your vehicle in general. If detected and rectified in time, this can help with extending the life of your battery. This is where the BMS comes into the picture.
Why choose FS-LT?
The FS LT provides detailed insights on parameters indicating the battery state. The FSLT is best in class when it comes to accurately measuring State of Charge (SOC) and State of Health (SOH). So how are these parameters relevant to the vehicle’s performance?
State of Charge is an indicator of the amount of charge in the battery. It’s like estimating the amount of fuel left in the tank of a regular two wheeler. Li-ion batteries tend to degrade on under/overcharging. So a timely warning in both situations can be given by measuring the SOC levels.
Similarly the SOH or State of Health compares the present condition of the battery to it’s ideal conditions. Our team has done extensive research and developed predictive algorithms for measuring the SOH. Depending on the application of the battery, these algorithms are highly reconfigurable and compatible with over the air updates.
Additionally, the FS-LT possesses CAN Bus 2.0 A&B interface for charge control and system interfacing. While competitors have only one interface, our product has two; one for the BMS to internally communicate and one for external communication. This ensures that no peripheral equipments could disrupt battery management communications.
Unlike our competition, every second of the battery life will be recorded. More data helps the OEM to conduct meaningful Post-mortem and Warranty claims investigations.Normally this would lead to enormous amount of data, but we’ve developed compression algorithms tailored to reduce, by a factor of 20, the memory & communication bandwidth required for storage and retrieval.
What really sets us apart? Our battery intelligence platform.
Our battery intelligence platform, Edison Analytics is the linking point between the functioning of the two wheeler and improving the life of the battery. Edison enables our clients to build better batteries by providing analytics and configuration management. This also includes remote servicing and warranty management.
The data from our Smart BMS is communicated to our mobile application FreeView via Bluetooth. When our BMS is taken out for maintenance, the information is conveyed to Edison and stored in our server. Here, the last state of error, voltage and location presence via GPS can also be obtained and referred to.
What makes it useful for two wheeler manufacturers is that while accessing this data from FS-LT, problems in the battery can be detected at an early stage. This can save the consumer from incurring long term damage costs later by preemptively solving maintenance woes. As soon as problems and errors come across, vehicle owners can be immediately advised to get their vehicle checked and repair.
The fully customized mobile application provides data regarding temperature and errors while regular usage. This is essential in maintenance check-ups for two reasons. One, to detect problems such as overheating. Two, to generally detect errors in normal functioning like premature wearing out. The dashboard can simply communicate the battery status to our end user i.e. the two wheeler owner or technicians running audits or maintenance checks and warn them about the same. This timely warning and consequential remedial can save the users from long term damage expenses! It also eliminates the need to provide a fully wired screen for display.
Two Wheeler Fleet Management Simplified
Another aspect of two wheeler mobility is the rise of rental services for these vehicles and their use in e-commerce product deliveries . Considering ownership of a fleet of electric two wheelers, keeping a track of their battery performance across geographies can be tricky. In this scenario, a software connecting the dots between the battery health and our servers is needed.
Edison will help you keep a track of your two-wheelers performance remotely. Real time alerts about location (GPS tracking), battery status, trip history, geo-fencing, battery swapping or charging, remote shutdown (reboot), and firmware updates can be sent. If you own an electric two wheeler fleet, this will help reduce the possibility of battery related accidents and damages drastically.
Our mission: Powering the next generation of electric two-wheelers
Cutting edge innovation in two wheeler mobility is further needed to ease these woes of the consumers. This is exactly what we aim to provide; a platform for battery pack makers and electric two wheeler manufacturers to build world class batteries. Our advanced battery intelligence & analytics platform equips you to build a battery tailored for your needs, but having features that can be utilized in general.
Rest assured, we will help you smoothly ride this change in mobility for the years to come.
